Veiner. Beveler. Camouflage: DIY Leather Belt

Using stamping to belt blanks and strips is a fun and easy way to add pattern to a finished leather belt or bag strap. It’s also a great way to create custom designs without investing in expensive dies. With just a handful of materials and tools, you’ll have DIY leather belts in no time! Let’s get started with this quick project.

Because there are so many stamp combination you can make (especially if you own many stamps), you have lots of freedom with your designs. If you have our 6 Piece Basic Stamp Tool Set, you've got a great starting point. The background, beveler, shader, veiner, camouflage and seeder stamps are great tools for making belt strap and borders. 

This would also be a fantastic project to make with kids. They could come up with their own unique designs by figuring out stamp combination, but leaving the stamping to the adults if your kids are too young to keep a steady hand while stamping.

Here is what you need:

  1. Tape measure
  2. Rotary Punch
  3. Utility knife
  4. Scratch awl
  5. Acrylic template
  6. Veg cowhide strip, 9/10oz
  7. 6 piece basic stamp tool set
  8. Mallet or maul
  9. Spray bottle, sponge and water
  10. Marble slab
  11. Adjustable stitching groover
  12. Veg practice pieces or veg scrap 

 

Let's Make it:

Watch the video below and make your own stamp leather belt.

Step 1: Measure your body by threading the tape measure through the belt loops of your trousers. Measure and round to the nearest inch.

Step 2: Mark the buckle and hole location. Shape the belt end.

Step 3: With rotary punch and utility knife make an opening for the belt buckle.

Step 4: Wet sponge and damp leather strip. Wait for water to get absorbed before impressing the stamps onto the leather with a mallet.

Step 5: Alternate stamping tools to create pattern impressions.

Step 6: To attach the buckle, make marks and punch holes.

Step 7: Sandwich keeper between the layers of belt strap. Fasten with rivet and rivet setter.

Step 8: Punch 4 or 5 holes and your stamped leather belt is complete!
